Description

Sloths represent one of the animals that people feel most attracted to. But, why?

These slow-moving, tree-hugging mammals have captivated the hearts of nature lovers worldwide — and once you see one in its natural habitat, you’ll understand why. Sloths are extraordinary survivors: they spend up to 20 hours a day resting in the canopy, move at a top speed of just 0.03 mph on the ground, and have a metabolism so efficient they can survive on as few as 162 calories a day.

At Proyecto Asis, we are home to two species of wild sloth: the Brown-throated three-toed sloth (Bradypus variegatus) and Hoffmann’s two-toed sloth (Choloepus hoffmanni). Our guided sloth tour takes you on a walk through our small private reserve, where both species live freely in the trees. You’ll learn to spot the subtle differences between them and gain a deep appreciation for their role in the rainforest ecosystem.

What makes our tour different?

We believe in ethical, responsible wildlife tourism. We have no sloths in captivity — ever. Every sloth you see on our tour is wild and living freely in its natural habitat or in rehabilitation after injuries caused by humans, dogs or power lines, your visit directly funds the veterinary care and daily support these animals need. We use a high-powered telescope and phone skope to bring you extraordinary close-up views without disturbing the animals. Our certified naturalist guides will take photos for you so you leave with stunning images — no zoom lens required.

The 90-minute tour also includes four interpretive stations packed with detailed information on sloth biology, conservation status, and Proyecto Asis’s rehabilitation and release work. By the end of the tour, you really will feel like a sloth expert.

What to bring?

Comfortable clothing, tennis or hiking shoes, a poncho or rain jacket, and bug repellent. The trail is easy walking — suitable for all fitness levels and ages.
