Description

Experience Costa Rica’s wildlife

At Proyecto Asis, a certified wildlife sanctuary and rescue center in La Fortuna, every animal you see has a story. Our expert naturalist guides walk you through the reserve, introducing you to rescued animals one by one — explaining where they came from, why they can’t be released back into the wild, and what role each species plays in Costa Rica’s rainforest ecosystem. This is not a zoo. Every animal at Asis arrived because of injury, illegal trafficking, or human contact that made them unable to survive in the wild. By visiting, you directly support the ongoing cost of their care and rehabilitation. You’ll leave with a deeper understanding of wildlife conservation and some extraordinary photos to bring home.

Wildlife you’ll see on the tour

Our sanctuary is home to many rescued species. Depending on the day, your tour may include:
  • White-faced capuchin monkey (Cebus capucinus) — highly intelligent and famously curious
  • Spider monkey (Ateles geoffroyi) — built for life in the canopy with prehensile tails
  • Scarlet macaw (Ara macao) and Great green macaw (Ara ambiguus) — both endangered species
  • Keel-billed toucan (Ramphastos sulfuratus) — Costa Rica’s most iconic bird
  • Spectacled caiman (Caiman crocodilus) — a resident of our reserve’s water area
  • Collared peccary (Pecari tajacu), coatis (Nasua narica), margay (Leopardus wiedii), parrots, and more

What to expect

Your guide will begin with a brief introduction to Proyecto Asis — our history, our conservation mission, and how the sanctuary works. From there, you’ll walk through the reserve stopping at each animal’s habitat. Guides engage all ages, making this an especially rich experience for families with children. A coffee break is included mid-tour.Want to go further? Our Wildlife Tour + Volunteer program lets you spend working alongside our animal care team — feeding, cleaning enclosures, and preparing enrichment activities for the animals. A deeply rewarding option for anyone who wants hands-on involvement in conservation.

What to bring

Comfortable clothing, closed shoes (flip flops are not permitted), and bug repellent. No special fitness level required — the trail is accessible for all ages.

Really enjoyed the tour with Carlos and learned so much about illegal pet trafficking – and I thought I was fairly informed to begin with! Some beautiful and unique animals, mostly bound for release, which is so great to see, and a solid explanation for every animal that will need to finish their life at the facility. This is not a zoo, these are not pets, and the animals are treated with a lot of respect.
Also lucked out and saw a wild sloth mother and baby while on the tour. Great experience. Definitely recommend.
