What our visitors say
TripAdvisor
Our Sloth Tour is a guided walk through the private reserve at Proyecto Asís, on the road between Florencia and La Fortuna, about 27 km from downtown La Fortuna and the Arenal Volcano area. A naturalist guide finds the wild sloths that live freely in the trees, and a high-powered telescope brings them up close. You see both Costa Rican sloth species in their natural habitat.

What you’ll see on the sloth tour
The trail through the reserve is easy and suits all ages. Your guide knows where the sloths like to rest and spots them high in the canopy, then sets up the telescope so everyone gets a clear, close view. With a phone scope, your guide can also take close-up photos with your own phone.
Along the way, four interpretive stations cover sloth biology, their conservation status and Proyecto Asís’s rehabilitation and release work. The sloths stay wild and undisturbed, so what you see is their natural behavior: resting, feeding and moving slowly through the branches.
The two sloth species of Costa Rica
Both Costa Rican species live in our reserve, and your guide will show you how to tell them apart:
- Brown-throated three-toed sloth (Bradypus variegatus): recognizable by its dark facial mask, it feeds on the leaves of specific trees and is often seen during the day.
- Hoffmann’s two-toed sloth (Choloepus hoffmanni): slightly larger and mostly nocturnal, with a broader diet of leaves, fruits and flowers.
