Hidden treasures in the rainforest!

One of our daily visitors: The Congo or howler monkey.
Howler monkeys are primates that we can find in Central America and South America.
The monkey’s howl can be heard up to 3 miles on occasion. They are able to create such an incredibly audible sound due to an enlarged hyoid bone that is located in their throat. The hyoid bone basically acts like a huge resonator.
We invite you to learn about initiatives like @somoscongos that have been working for years for the conservation of these beautiful primates.
This male belongs to a gang that lives freely in the vicinity of @proyectoasis
Remember: wild animals are not pets.

A wild and nocturnal visitor. Last night we spotted this porcupine here at the property.
Some interesting facts about them are: It is a rodent, they might have up 30.000 quills 😰, the only part of their body where they don’t have quills is on their stomach.

Did you check these four pictures? 💞
A baby kinkajou, a baby howler monkey, a baby margay and a baby sloth.
We never show people holding or touching animals as this is not permitted here (this is not a correct practice) and should not be permitted anywhere you see wildlife. 🐾
We know the impact a photo like this can have when a person is shown holding them. This might get you twice and more times likes or followers… but as professionals we know this is not the way. At the end many people can only see themselves replacing that person because they want to hold the animals aswell. This is one of the reasons why you still find business based on exhibition of animals where you are allow to touch them, hold them or take photos right next to them, so this kind of business pay others to steal animals and use them for such shows, these animals are mistreated in many different ways.
No matter how hardworker a person can look, if they show themselves touching animals they are giving a wrong impression. One thing is to be documented (on a photo or video) helping rescue an animal and another thing is a photo where you cuddle, play or touch animals and then share a message about them. This second situation just invites indirectly others to do the same. ☹️
We must be very careful regarding what we support or share. 🧐
Wild animals and people should not appear together in photos. It can happen that you can rescue an animal and you want to show that good action, but if you do not share this photo with a proper description you are confusing people.
Lots of influencers are posing with animals (they say they care for); we must tell them there is a better way to help those and thousand more animals.

We are growing! No matter how hard times are lately, our rescue center keeps working on innovation, doing its best to improve for the welfare of those many animals we cared for, and the others recently coming or coming later. 🐒🦉🐆🦜🐫🦡
This 2020 we started another crucial project: to make our quarantine area much bigger and set the best possible standards for the animals’ requirements. We know there are a lot of other things and equipment to get; however, we keep going forward👷♂️
If you want to help, donating any small amount makes a difference, you can contact us: 📧 info@asis.cr

Seguimos creciendo.

You might still remember the jaguarundis we received and shared with you on social media in March 2019. Babies find it very hard to survive without their mother, but we have a happy story to share today. Though unfortunately one of them could not make it, we can feel very happy to announce the liberation of the other one which grew strong and wild as they need to be.
Check this new video, you will see how little she was and how she looks now. She was taken to the Estación Pocosol, Bosque Eterno de los Niños, Children’s Eternal Rain Forest / Bosque Eterno de los Niños
Enjoy with us the rewarding moment when a wild animal goes free again.

This is the first lowland paca that was at Proyecto Asis and one we can release, some are still in rehabilitation. This one was ready to go. This beautiful animal is commonly hunted for their meat, but this was released in a safe area surrounded by forest rangers.
Thanks to SINAC for the video where you see it go into the wild.
This week we received two species of owls and we will be caring for them until they are ready to be free again.
Three baby barn owls (Tyto alba) reported in a property where they could become an easy pray for domestic animals, so they were brought here by collaborators of Sistema Nacional de Áreas de Conservación (SINAC)
Yesterday we received a crested owl (Lophostrix cristata) found nearby the new street in Florencia, San Carlos. Apparently unable to fly (possibly hit by a car, they reported).
Next week we are doing some tests to see if we can release this crested owl. We will be caring for all it’s needs until then and hopefully will be free again.
The baby barn owls will have to stay longer, but we hopefully see them go away as soon as they are ready. We have succesfully done this before in other occasions.
